Storymaps
I want to tell you about a workshop I just finished supporting as a one of the co-leads.
StoryCenter is a really interesting organization that has been around for over 30 years. Their focus is on helping people and organizations tell stories from their lives. Their approach is very much rooted in asset based community development and when I chatted with their director Joe Lambert some time ago it became quickly obvious that we speak similar language. He asked me to help with a storytelling workshop using StoryMaps - a little offshoot app developed by ESRI and their massive ArcGIS mapping software. The client for this workshop was Gros Morne Institute for Sustainable Tourism and the participants came from all over Atlantic Canada. They were a lively and funny bunch and a pleasure to hang out with.
As part of the workshop, as a sort of a demonstration of expectations we had (minimum six points on a map, embedded photography, video, audio and text) and the capabilities of the StoryMaps as well as WeVideo editing app, I developed the StoryMap below using some of the existing material I had from the Rennie’s River project. It was also a great learning experience for me to expand the bit I already knew about StoryMaps.
All this to say is that you should check out StoryCenter’s website for the upcoming public workshops and I will have some more news soon about some new offerings we are going to make available.
Enjoy the story!
P.S. You can see the full screen version here, but the point is that once you make a story, you can embed it wherever you want.
