Going old school...

Yesterday, we went for a walk and made our way to Food for Thought to get some sour cherries and ajvar. On the way back, we walked through the Bannerman Park and in the middle of a path, by the new gazebo, was this set up. It looks like it was a part of a photoshoot, I guess. There were a man and a woman with a camera sitting at one of the picnic tables nearby and it seemed like it was their set up or at least they said they are fine if I take a photo of it. There was nobody there. No kid, no photographer, no parents. Just this old-fashioned school chair, with a plastic coat hanger, jar of pencils, a globe, what I am pretty sure was a fake apple, and a princess dress. This is why I love documentary, straight work. It doesn’t matter what you come up with as a concept in your head, the real world will always be weirder and funnier and sadder and more surprising. So just go out and keep your eyes and ears open.

Happy Fathers’ Day to dads out there…

NOTE: For years, long before blogging was really a thing, I had a photoblog on one of the first dedicated photoblogging platforms that is now long gone. I also ran my own Wordpress site for years until my server provider got hacked and my site (and many others) was hopelessly corrupted so I just deleted the whole thing. Since then, I have been running this website as a mix of a portfolio and an archive of previously published work. I had an Instagram account that was sort of like blogging, but Instagram turned into a mess of ads and videos that I wasn’t willing to invest in any more of my time. I have ran a monthly newsletter for some time now. It’s free and you can subscribe here. It’s focused on documentary practice. But I miss writing a more frequent, shorter bits and showing off photographs that are not a part of anything, just sort of daily ephemera. So rather than begging you to subscribe to another Substack or contribute to a Patreon account, I am going to go old school and turn on the blog functionality here. It’s free. You can subscribe to the RSS feed if that’s your thing or just pop here once in a while and see what’s going on.

If you feel like you’d like to somehow support the work, here is the deal: any photo on this blog can be made into an 8x10 archival print (10 inches on a long side, anyway) for $25 + shipping. Just send me an email and let me know what photo you want.
